My “radical” roots.

Getting into vegan fights, etc makes me think of something I’ve thought about a lot lately. My roots and how problematic they were.

I first learned of radical politics through crust punk. Through it I learned all about anarchy, animal rights, and feminism. Some of it was good and relevant, a lot of it was pretty fucked up.

Since I grew up with the internet, the proof of my learning (or unlearning) process is everywhere, fucked up journal entries, facebook posts or comments, messages, etc. I have been on tumblr for almost two years and I cringe at the thought of reading from page one.

Things that I do not believe anymore:

  • That everyone has the ability to be vegan and they have no excuse not to be.
Easy to understand how fucked this is once you check your privilege. Like I have already said, veganism isn’t accessible for a lot of folks.
  • Anti-Breeding
A lot of population control shit is super racist and not good. Pax has posted some good stuff about it recently.
  • That sex work is degrading (I learned feminism from Aus Rotten originally, you see my mistake)
Sex work is empowering and awesome for a lot of folks, it’s not my business what someone wants to do with their own bodies. If it works for you, great! I get to meet a lot of awesome radical sex workers who have taught me a lot about this kind of stuff.
  • If you smoke cigarettes you are not a true _________
First version of my zine, vomit. Full of this shit. There are a lot of reasons why someone might smoke, coping mechanisms and all that. Addictions are tough and I can’t really speak to them considering I’ve never had one. The first version of my zine is super shitty and says if you smoke you aren’t an anarchist or vegan. I disagree with this now, wholeheartedly. I want to change the name and rewrite it for the third issue. I think the information is relevant to people who care about these issues, but consumer politics won’t bring the rev, dog.
  • Consumer politics in general.
Not buying certain things will not bring the rev.

Whew.
