Today at my work, a group of traveler kids came in. One of them with a huge goatee, cowboy hat and torn off fingernails came up to the counter and called me cute. I politely explained that comments like that were unwanted and not okay. He told me it was a “free country” and sat down. Later on, he started talking loudly about how political correctness (aka not using hatespeech) and anarchy were not related. He also suggested there was such a thing as “reverse sexism” because his family expected a lot from him, as a man (I bet they think he’s a real treasure.) I explained that regardless of what he believed to be true, my work is an anarchist space, a safer space and our safer space policy explicitly says that we are anti-oppressive behavior and language. He asked what was wrong about commenting on my looks, and I responded with “Well I think you look like Fred Durst.” He got extremely offended and I said “See? I guess it’s a good idea to keep your opinions about how other people look to yourself.”
